If you go to your “Gmail” account then go to the label called “Spam”, you will see all the junks mails that had been sent to you everyday in every hour.

In this blog, I would like to build some knowledge of the dark side on the Internet, Spamming and to spread more awareness of how to avoid it and to prevent your software from it.

Spam is a form of unwanted commercial advertising, unsolicited digital communication often an email that gets sent out in bulk, as it is a very cost-effective medium for the sender.

More than 95% of email messages sent worldwide is considered as spam. As a result, spam fighting tools have becomingly important to all users of email.

This is how Spam works. Technically, Spam have never been sent directly from advertising company itself. It is usually sent by a company in the business of unsolicited email distribution, which we called a “spammer”. Advertiser makes an agreement with a spammer, who creates email advertisements to a group of unsuspecting recipients. Spam cost is far less than postal bulk mailings, which with $100 an advertiser could spam up to 10,000 recipients compare to a postal mailing for several thousand dollars.

How do Spammers find you?

Spammers can sometimes find you by buying your address. They obtain details by using software programs called “harvesters” which collect names from websites, newsgroups, or other services which users have put their email address when filling up the privacy data.

How to avoid spam?

As you know how spammers work, here is how to avoid from spam:

  • Cybersecurity must install. In case when you click a bad link or download malware sent to you via spam, good cybersecurity software will recognize it and shut it down before it can do any damage to your system or network.
  • Do not respond to spam: If you are responding to spam you will demonstrate to spammers that your email is valid and many more spam will be sent to you. Also, to a mobile phone spam. Just hang up and add the caller to your smartphone’s blocked numbers list.
  • Always check the sender because spam get sent from falsified email addresses to the real sender,
  • Always examine the message header. For example, If the address looks like this format -fjtr@runbox.com or gshyt4j5kkds7j6@runbox.com, this is a fake and unreal mail.
  • Be careful with autoreplies, as they can verify your email address to spammers.
  • Firewall software is a must use for your computer. It can stop attacking from people attempting to compromise your system and possibly use it to send spam.
  • Use different username on several domains — it makes work less easier for spammers to find you on other services.
  • Do not use the same email address too much. Use vary email address a much a you can.
  • Do not click on the link or make a purchase from spam messages you receive.

The Bad Side of Web 2.0

In this Generation Z, which is known as digital generation or born digital, represents everything to be technological advances in such an innovative approaching. As everyone can make things go digital quite simple and clean, however that information could be not clean as it looks too. In a world of fake information and scam which had been created few years after the revolution of Web 2.0 make some people feel so secure and comfort in hurting, stealing other people assets without using their real hands but by their virtual site with their advanced technical software skills.

My own real experience with scam

It is kind of embarrassment that a digital business student had been fooled by a fake online business. This is a real story which happened to me as my first experience with scam.

So here the story begins. Not to mention that clothing brand’s name, but I found that brand on Instagram and ended up spending half a grand on my order. That clothing brand (MXXXXXX) looks perfectly so real and to be honest their designs are so fashionable. They are liked a luxury design with reasonable price which is the reason I fell for. But who know the dream is still a dream and never be awaken? They are not responsible for my order. They do not reply me back but using automatically reply with the same email and non-tracking number. They even show the face of the founder and another clothing line which I assumed it is also scam. Thinking why I do not report them? I have done everything to complaint about them and try to claim for refunding, but nothing seems to happen till now. Moreover, it is not just me who had been fooled by them. There are few more girls who had messaged me that it happened to them as well. I started wondering why nobody noticed that business is a scam, then somebody reached out to me that clothing brand kept deleting all the bad comments, and any comments who said they are a scam. I do not believe it at first till I commented that they are a fake business online and they deleted mine. This is such a lesson to me before buying anything online specially website which look closely to perfect as that brand.

It is too late to claim it back, but I do not regret it as I had been taught such as a life lesson from online buying. If you would like to know that clothing brand, please do not be hesitate to ask and be aware of it from all my good intentions and to stop the scam.
